Ingredients
For the Dough:
- 1 package active dry yeast
- ¾ cup warm water
- 1½ cups warm milk
- ½ cup sugar, divided
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4½ cups all-purpose flour, divided
- ¼ cup shortening, melted
For the Filling:
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon flour
- 1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
For the Glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar (10X)
- 1 tablespoon milk
Preparation
In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water, stirring until fully combined. Add warm milk, ¼ cup of the sugar, and salt. Stir in 3 cups of the flour until the mixture is very wet. Let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour.
After the first rise, stir in the remaining ¼ cup of sugar and melted shortening. Add the remaining 1½ cups of flour. The dough will still be wet. Let it rise again until doubled, about another hour.
Meanwhile, prepare the filling by mixing the brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon in a small bowl. Set aside. For the glaze, combine powdered sugar and milk in another bowl. Set aside.
Once the dough has doubled in size, dump it onto a well-floured surface and divide it into two halves. Using a floured rolling pin, roll each half into a large rectangle, about 18 inches long. Spread the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over each rectangle. Roll the dough tightly and cut into 1-inch slices. Place the slices into well-greased cake pans and let them rise until doubled.
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Sprinkle any escaped sugar mixture over the rolls and bake for about 20 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed up in the center. Drizzle the glaze over the hot rolls and enjoy!
