French Strawberry Toast Rolls: A Decadent Breakfast Delight
Ingredients:
- 4-6 slices Texas toast or slightly stale bread
- 3 large eggs
- 3 tablespoons cold milk
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons butter (for frying)
- 1 cup (250g) cream cheese (softened)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 cups fresh strawberries (chopped)
Preparation:
Start by preparing the creamy strawberry filling. In a mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, granulated sugar, and chopped strawberries. Blend until smooth using a hand mixer or spatula. Chill the mixture while you prepare the toast rolls.
In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, honey, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract until well combined. This custard mixture will coat the toast rolls.
Take one slice of Texas toast and flatten it slightly using a rolling pin until it’s about 1/2 inch thick. Spread a generous layer of the strawberry cream cheese filling on one half of the bread, leaving the other half bare. Carefully roll the bread from the filled side, enclosing the filling. Repeat with the remaining slices.
Heat a non-stick skillet over medium-low heat and add a tablespoon of butter. Dip each toast roll into the custard mixture, ensuring it’s fully coated, then place it in the skillet. Fry the rolls for 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. Avoid overcrowding the pan for even cooking.
Once the rolls are beautifully browned, transfer them to a serving plate. Dust with powdered sugar, a sprinkle of cinnamon, or your favorite topping. Drizzle with warm maple syrup or honey for an extra touch of sweetness. Serve immediately and enjoy this indulgent breakfast treat!
