Ingredients
- 2½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp white sugar
- 2 egg yolks
- ½ cup milk
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 cup shortening
- 2 egg whites
- 9 apples – peeled, cored, and sliced
- ¾ cup white sugar
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- 1½ cups confectioners’ sugar
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 3 tbsp milk
Preparation
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch pan.
- In a medium bowl, stir together flour, 2 tbsp sugar, and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add egg yolks and ½ cup milk, stirring until combined.
- Roll out half the dough on a floured surface to fit the pan. Place in the pan and spread a light coating of egg white. Fill with sliced apples and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Roll out remaining dough, place on top of apples, and brush with egg white.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes until crust is golden. In a small bowl, beat confectioners’ sugar, pinch of salt, vanilla, and 3 tbsp milk until smooth. Drizzle over cooled bars and cut into squares.
